Inaccessible Website Demo

The Disability Rights Commission, UK has a demo of how browsing an inaccessible website feels like for a disabled person. It’s quite useful, especially for those of us who design with our guts, channeling empathy into design. I’ve always felt that empathy is a great stimulator of user centered design. Even user-hating geeks become more pliable to design change after seeing users struggle with an unusable interface.

Interestingly, the demo uses Flash, a technology not known for its accessibility, to simulate a disabled user’s perspective.
