I just sent this mail out to 1. Director(Planning & New Services) BSNL 2. Deputy Director General (New Services) BSNL. Lets see if anything happens.

I found out that BSNL will soon be offering SMS on landlines. I’ve written about this and made some suggestions on my weblog at

http://kingsley.blog-city.com/readblog.cfm?BID=16598. Here’s the gist:

1. Why should subscribers get new instruments? Why can’t it be like this scenario:
The phone rings. The user picks it up. A pre-recorded message informs them that they have a text message in their inbox. The user then listens to a text to speech conversion program read the message out to them. They then lsiten to a menu of options: Reply, Delete, Forward. The user can reply by using the number keys, which can be filtered for predictive text by the server. Or forward it to another address.

2. Why can’t BSNL offer email over landlines?
Same scenario. All messages (Voice, Email, SMS, anything) land up in a mailbox. The user either receives messages as they arrive, or accesses them by dialing MAIL (6245, but it’s easier to remember). This facility can unify the average home users communication needs and serve as an extremely effective means of long distance communication.

If you decide to implement any of these ideas, you may want to hire a human factors professional as a service designer or consultant to go in-depth into these ideas before implementing them.

Sincerely,
Kingsley Jegan J
